Work Detail Spanish contractor Acciona has won a €62m contract to build the first runway at the new Cabo Rojo International Airport in Pedernales, Dominican Republic. Acciona’s scope of work includes building a runway 3.1km long and 60m wide, a taxiway, runway safety strip, aprons for Boeing 777 aircraft, drainage works and parking areas. The Dominican government intends the airport to boost tourism in the region. It will be the country’s ninth, and will handle around 250,000 passengers a year initially, with potential plans to expand capacity to handle a million passengers by 2042, which would make it the country’s third busiest. The Dominican government is now planning the airport’s second phase, including building a control tower, a fire station, an electrical substation and a water and wastewater treatment plant. A passenger and cargo terminal contract is expected to follow.
