The South Dakota Department of Transportation (DOT) recently announced crews will install center line rumble strips on Highway 85, north of Buffalo, and apply microsurface to several routes in Western South Dakota. A mobile operation will be utilized to cut in the rumble strips, beginning Wednesday. The $101,402 project was awarded to Diamond Surface, Inc., of Rogers, Minn. The overall completion date for the project is Oct. 21. Microsurfacing of several routes in the region — including Belle Fourche — begun Tuesday. Mircrosurfacing is a mixture of polymer modified emulsion, graded aggregates, mineral filler, water, and additives. The chemical reaction allows the material to set up very quickly and is used to minimize aging, provide skid resistance, correct rutting and minor surface profile irregularities, and extend pavement life by about five to seven years. The routes will be microsurfaced in the following order: Newell: The first 11 miles of mainline, north of Newell on Highway 79, are already completed. Belle Fourche: Highway 212 shoulders between Belle Fourche and Nisland Faith: Highway 212 between Maurine and Faith Custer: The first nine miles of shoulders, north of Custer on Highway 16 Hermosa: Highway 79 shoulders from Rapid City to five miles south of Hermosa Traffic will be reduced to one lane with flaggers and a pilot car during daylight hours and open to two-way traffic during non-working hours. Motorists can expect 10-15 minute delays. Asphalt Surface Technologies Corporation, of St. Cloud, Minn., was awarded the $2.2 million microsurfacing project. The overall completion date for the microsurfacing project is Sept. 14. The DOT asked motorists to watch for signs, reduce speed in the work zone, and be prepared for sudden slowing, merging, and stopped traffic, as well as construction workers and equipment adjacent to the roadway. |
