China Eastern Airlines recently launched a project to construct the largest aircraft hangar in Asia. China Eastern Airlines is one of the three major airlines in China. The facility will be built alongside two others at the Lin-gang Special Area of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone. The latter is located in the southeast region of Shanghai. Pudong Airport is on its north and Yangshan International Port to its south. The construction works are expected to occur between mid-2024 and the first half of 2026. They will be carried out as part of China Eastern’s international aviation maintenance service platform project. The construction cost for the entire project is estimated at 1.5 billion yuan ($207 million) or its thereabouts. Upon completion, the project’s gross floor area will exceed 110,000 square meters. The largest aircraft hangar in Asia will have a 316-meter span and a 146-meter depth. This facility will solely have the capacity to simultaneously accommodate nine wide-body aircraft for maintenance. The hungers will be supported by facilities of repair, modification and other infrastructures. The first of seven projects developed jointly by China Eastern and Lin-gang Special Area The project for the construction of the three hungers, including the largest aircraft hangar in Asia, is the first of seven projects jointly developed by China Eastern and Lin-gang Special Area. The projects, which are a result of a strategic collaboration agreement signed in June 2022, are meant to build a new global highland in the aviation industry. The projects include an Asia-Pacific one-stop aviation logistics hub and an international aviation maintenance service platform. In addition, the projects include an aviation financial service project as well as an Asia-Pacific aviation materials trade and distribution centre. According to the agreement, the two parties will pump more than US$ 3 billion into the development of the seven projects. |
