Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the state government will embark on a comprehensive road infrastructure project aimed at constructing all-weather roads in 800 tea gardens across Assam, with an estimated expenditure of ?800 crore. The decision, approved by the state cabinet earlier in the day, underscores efforts to enhance connectivity within tea garden areas.
Addressing the media at a press conference, Sarma highlighted the cabinets endorsement of the proposal to construct line roads in the tea gardens. Each road will be developed at a cost of ?1 crore, totaling the approved budget of ?800 crore.
In addition to road infrastructure, the cabinet also sanctioned ?8 crore allocations per school to upgrade the infrastructure of 126 state-run educational institutes, amounting to a total expenditure exceeding ?1,000 crore. Sarma emphasized the governments commitment to enhancing building infrastructure in government high schools, with plans to upgrade 500 schools during his tenure. Currently, work is underway for 252 schools following the latest cabinet decision.
Looking ahead, Sarma outlined future plans to enhance infrastructure in an additional 1,000 Assamese medium high schools post the 2026 assembly polls.
Furthering the states water resource management efforts, the cabinet approved guidelines for the Real-Time Data Acquisition System (RTDAS), 2024. This initiative aims to facilitate hydrological data collection for effective water resource planning and flood forecasting across critical river basins in Assam. The government has also mapped out a tentative 10-year roadmap for installing nearly 800 RTDAS units statewide.
On educational initiatives, Sarma highlighted the establishment of state-run coaching institutes in various towns to prepare economically disadvantaged students for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). Currently operational in Dibrugarh and Tezpur, with plans for three more centres in Nalbari, Silchar, and Jorhat this year, the government aims to establish centres in every district going forward.
