Work Detail In light of recent concerns voiced by SAPP president Datuk Yong Teck Lee regarding the participation of non-Sabahan electrical contractors in Sabah’s energy sector, the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering local expertise in alignment with the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 (SE-RAMP 2040). ECoS CEO, Datuk Ir. Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid, acknowledged the concerns raised and emphasized the importance of local participation in the energy sector. He stated, “The LSS-SABAH 2024 pre-requirement emphasizes that interested bidders must be a Sabah-based company or a Sabah Government-Linked Company (GLC), or a Consortium of Companies, with a minimum equity ownership of Sabah-based companies or Sabah GLCs within the consortium. Bidders with more local content will receive merit points.” Addressing the shortage of local electrical contractors with class PV (grid-connected), Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid explained, “Due to the lack of solar programs in Sabah in recent years, registration has been opened to non-Sabahan contractors to ensure the successful implementation of solar programs and address critical generation shortages.” ECoS is taking proactive steps to increase local competency by establishing solar training programs accredited by ECoS training providers in Sabah. Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid stated, “Through these initiatives, along with the revival of solar programs in Sabah, we aim to increase the number of local electrical contractors with class PV (grid-connected) and provide employment opportunities to local competent individuals.” While emphasizing the importance of local participation, Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid stressed the need to maintain safety, quality, and competitiveness in the energy industry to safeguard the interests of the state and the public. The reassurance from ECoS underscores its commitment to nurturing local talent and ensuring sustainable growth in Sabah’s energy sector in line with SE-RAMP 2040 objectives.
