Work Detail SK Eco Plant is accelerating the creation of added value by launching a solar power project on the roof of an industrial complex in Vietnam. This initiative not only produces solar power using idle land but also secures carbon emissions rights. On June 10th, SK Eco Plant held a semi-official ceremony for the rooftop solar power project at its Samil Vina plant in Dong Nai Province, Vietnam. Rooftop solar power involves generating electricity by installing solar power modules on the roof of a building. This method eliminates the need to secure a separate site for solar power generation and avoids location regulations by utilizing existing idle space. The 1MW solar power plant installed on the roof of the Samil Vina factory generates electricity solely for on-site consumption. This self-consumption distributed energy approach minimizes the need for additional power grids and reduces energy loss during transmission and distribution. Samil Vina, a global textile export company that has received requests from customers to use renewable energy, commenced operations with the completion of the rooftop solar power plant. SK Eco Plant plans to expand the supply of self-consumption rooftop solar power equipment in Vietnam’s industrial complexes that require a stable power supply. Alongside the completed site, nearly 7MW of rooftop solar power projects are underway in Dong Nai, Binh Duong, and Hai Phong in Vietnam. Through this project, SK Eco Plant aims to secure carbon emissions rights. The company completed registration for the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Vietnam in 2021. CDM, one of the greenhouse gas reduction measures, enables securing carbon emissions credits from the United Nations in proportion to the performance of greenhouse gas reduction projects. Topsun, a domestic solar power company in which SK Eco Plant made a strategic investment in 2022, will supply solar modules for this rooftop solar power project. This investment secures the value chain of the entire solar energy industry, including solar module manufacturing and business development. Synergies are also being created through cooperation with SK Coplant, such as solar power generation in Concho, Texas, and direct PPAs with SK Hynix. This project is expected to strengthen SK Eco Plant’s position in Vietnam’s renewable energy market, which holds high potential. In addition to the rooftop solar power plant, SK Eco Plant signed an agreement in March with Vietnam’s leading renewable energy company, BCG Energy (Bamboo Capital Group Energy), to jointly develop a renewable energy project of approximately 700 MW. SK Eco Plant also signed an MOU with Sudokwon Landfill Management Corporation and BCG Energy at BCG Energy’s headquarters in Ho Chi Minh City, southern Vietnam, to develop a greenhouse gas reduction project using renewable energy. This project aims to secure international greenhouse gas reduction results through waste incineration and power generation. Kim Jeong-hoon , CEO of SK Eco Plant Solutions BU , said, “ Vietnam is a place where economic growth and industrial development provide a stable supply of power and at the same time demand for carbon reduction coexists . ” “ We will solve global climate problems based on our expertise in bioenergy solutions , ” he said .
