“As human-induced activity is resulting in the planet breaching 6 out of 9 boundaries for a re-generative earth, it is ironical we need a World Environment Day to remind us to live within the means of the planet and in harmony with all life on earth.
Narrow sighted focus on decarbonization or supply-side technology innovations like renewable energy adoption manipulates our perception of reality on the back of unchecked and rampant consumption-growth driven by a lopsided focus on GDP, than on reducing inequality or inculcating mindful consumption whilst significantly enhancing circularity in every aspect of what we take out and consume from the planet.
Demand-side efforts are inherently more complex and often only possible through systems thinking and non-linear approaches in planning with a greater degree of care in execution. If capable of being implemented though, for example through adoption of district energy systems within an urban setting to provide thermal comfort with remarkably higher efficiencies and also providing avenues for water, waste and energy circularity whilst accelerating renewable energy adoption, the benefits towards meeting the currently siloed goals around sustainability can be immense.
The innovation we need here is more seamless governance and regulatory models between ministries, centre, state and cities on one hand, alongside business models that cut across sectors and partnerships that transcend between for and not for profit entities.”
