Work Detail Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Arifin Tasrif, reiterated the nation’s dedication to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during his visit to Tokyo. Tasrif emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060 or the 2070s, aligning with national conditions and capabilities. Speaking at the Nikkei Forum Future of Asia, Tasrif highlighted the issuance of the Enhanced National Determined Contribution (ENDC), aimed at further reducing emissions in the energy sector. Additionally, the Ministry has developed an NZE Roadmap focusing on renewable energy development, carbon reduction programs, early retirement of Steam Power Plants (PLTU), electrification, energy efficiency, and CCS/CCUS implementation. Acknowledging challenges, Tasrif emphasized Indonesia’s diverse energy sources, including hydrocarbon-based and clean renewables. He emphasized the need for strategic utilization amidst ongoing initiatives such as electricity interconnection infrastructure, natural gas exploration, and the phase-down program for PLTU. Tasrif underscored the importance of financing efforts, highlighting initiatives like JETP, AZEC, and IPEP, while stressing the necessity of further support for NZE acceleration. He emphasized the need for accelerated technological development and ease of industrial-scale deployment to maximize renewable energy utilization. The Minister emphasized Indonesia’s focus on downstream mineral processing to support the energy transition, create new jobs, and foster ecosystem development. Moreover, he highlighted efforts to encourage downstream mineral mining commodities to bolster the renewable energy ecosystem. Transitioning to electric vehicles was presented as a key strategy for decarbonizing road transport, aligning with emission reduction targets. Tasrif emphasized the imperative of reducing emissions, especially in the transportation sector, while highlighting the societal benefits of clean energy transitions. In conclusion, Tasrif emphasized the importance of strengthened cooperation among nations to ensure inclusive progress and mitigate climate impacts, advocating for a collaborative approach to address global challenges and advance clean energy transitions.
