Work Detail The rail infrastructure manager Banedanmark has announced that Danish ERTMS programme in the eastern part of the network has been revised again due to challenges with the progress of the installation. In Eastern Denmark, Banedanmark and the supplier Alstom have now drawn up a new timetable, the infrastructure manager says. In Eastern Denmark, the challenges have delayed the ERTMS deployment on some sections. At the same time, a number of new, large infrastructure projects have been launched since the start pf the work including the Fehmarn Belt tunnel, new Vestfyn railway line connecting Odense and Middlefart and capacity expansion at Ringsted. In these years, Banedanmark is replacing the old signalling system along the railway, which are the single biggest cause of delays. On the S-Bahn, the last section was rolled out with the new system in 2022, and it now runs as one of the best urban trains in the world, with a punctuality of almost 97 percent. In Western Denmark, several sections have been rolled out, and the work in Jutland is expected to be completed in 2027. The Danish ERTMS programme will be completed on all state lines in 2033, instead of 2030, as the initial deadline. The revised ERTMS rollout: Line Existing deadline Revised deadline Roskilde – Holbaek – Kalundborg 2024 2024 Svendorgbanen 2025 2026 Øresundsbanen 2025 2027 (2026) Ringsted – Mogenstrup 2029 2026 Nykøbing F. – Rødbyhavn 2028 2027 Kystbanen 2028 2033 Korsør – Middelfart 2027 2028 Vestfyn new rail line 2028 2029 Femern – 2029 Roskilde – Korsør 2029 2029-2030 Roskilde – Copenhagen 2028 2033 Copenhagen – Østerport 2030 2031 The nearly 100-year-old signalling system on the Danish railways is being replaced with the new European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). Banedanmark and Alstom are installing the signalling equipment on the entire train fleet and the trackside equipment along the lines East from Lillebælt. In 2018, Alstom set a new national railway speed record of 255 km/h during a ERTMS test on the Copenhagen – Ringsted line and one year later Denmark opened the first line equipped with ERTMS Alstom solutions for both trackside and onboard (trains) equipment. The fully integrated Traffic Management System is also delivered by Alstom. Ongoing delivery of Atlas, Alstom’s ERTMS-based signalling solution to Banedanmark replacing the existing trackside signalling system in the Eastern part of the country, as well as installing new on-board ERTMS equipment of the entire Danish fleet comprising approximately 350 regional trains, locomotives and yellow machines, of 16 different types.
