Work Detail | A native of Logan is hitting the ground running with his new job as soil conservationist for the National Resources Conservation Service for Hocking and Fairfield counties. “I’ve really enjoyed it so far. I think it compliments my interests and skills. I am still learning. It’s been a really good experience,” said Brice Shaw. Shaw, who started the position in June, has a unique job where he works outside to preserve nature. He said he wants to put his agriculture and soil health experience to work. “We work to implement conservation plans for local producers to help conserve the soil and water resources in the area,” he explained. “For example, putting in a buffer strip between a crop field and a stream to keep nutrients and soil from running into the waterway. We also do stuff with forestry and wildlife.” On top of his already impressive skills, the soil conservationist said he is also paying attention to learn more of what he can from his colleagues. “Just this week I was getting trained on oak tree generation. Learning about the oak forest and what goes into it. It’s not a quick process. It can take 15 to 25 years to get oaks back. "It’s a must to keep your knowledge current, like soil information, weeds, trees and a little bit of everything," he noted. Working with soil, Shaw said he has discovered something interesting. "I found an arrowhead at my previous job," he shared. Shaw is a graduate of Logan High School and was involved with Future Farmers of America (FFA). “The FFA program at Logan High School that’s what sent me on the track to college and where I’m at now,” he shared. “In FFA, we competed on a team and won first place with the current agriculture education teacher Andrew DeLong.” Shaw said he had a very good support system growing up. There were many people who made a positive impact. “I had people encouraging me along the way, Mr. Delong would be one of those, and other people in my life like my family," he said. From high school he went to The Ohio State University in Columbus. He received his bachelor's in agriculture, with a major in agronomy, which in simple terms is crop science. He also minored in agriculture business. He then landed a job at Precision Ag, a consulting company, in Delaware. At the job, Shaw said for a couple years he did soil testing, crop scouting, soil health analyses as well as working with spatial data management and GPS technologies. Shaw and his wife Kristy have been married for approximately two years and live in Columbus. In his free time, Shaw enjoys reading fiction books and jamming on his guitar. He’s been playing for more than eight years. “I play my own music and try to write songs. It’s always been me by myself in the living room or out on the porch,” Shaw shared. “I like it a lot and I’ve already learned a lot," he said, speaking of his career choice. "I think as I continue to develop here, it will be a really go spot for me.” |
