After an extension, the Argentine Naval Prefecture puts out to tender again the purchase of four OPV type vessels
The Argentine Naval Prefecture (PNA) has extended the bidding process for the acquisition of four new Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) vessels. According to the Official Gazette, Public Tender 38/2023 has extended the deadline for submitting offers until June 28, 2024.
This tender, which was announced on November 15, 2023, seeks to provide the naval force with modern and long-range vessels to reinforce its operations in the Argentine Exclusive Economic Zone. Amid growing disputes over marine resources, the need to effectively protect these waters takes on strategic importance.
Replacement and modernization
The four requested OPVs would replace or complement the current fleet of Mantilla-class patrol vessels, which have been in service for decades. The modernization of onboard means is crucial to maintain the effectiveness of the Naval Prefecture in its patrol, surveillance and control missions of maritime traffic.
According to the details of the tender, the new vessels must have a draft of 8.30 meters, electric propulsion and a power of 13,500 kilowatts. The delivery of the vessels is scheduled for a period of 48 months from the signing of the contract, with staggered deliveries every six or eight months.
Among the notable details, the weapons planned for these vessels are revealed:
Two RWS Sea-Rogue S.
Base for 12.7 mm caliber machine gun.
Mount for 20 mm cannon in the bow.
The acquisition of these OPVs represents a significant step in the strategy of renewal and strengthening of Argentine naval capabilities. In addition to improving surveillance of its exclusive economic zone, the new ships will allow the Naval Prefecture to respond more efficiently to emerging challenges in the regional maritime environment.
