Do the big millionaires know something that the rest of society doesnt? In recent times, different magnates, mainly linked to the world of technology, began to invest in the construction of their own bunkers, equipped with all the comforts and provisions to use them if necessary.
From basements to underground mansions to private islands, all sites have investments in maximum security technology and are designed to remain there for the long term.
This is the case of Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, who is in the midst of building an emporium on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. The development will have a 500-square-meter underground and bomb-proof doors, for which he allocated millions of dollars.
The creator of Facebook bought land on the Hawaiian island in 2014 for €156 million. In which the workers hired for the project are subject to a strict confidentiality agreement, since the operation is completely secret and Zuckerberg never wanted to give details. But, despite this, several details were leaked.
According to Wired magazine, which was able to access the plans that appear in public documents, the complex has more than a dozen buildings connected to two mansions through underground roads, and the place is also expected to be self-sufficient in water and electricity. .
As for the underground space, the plans show that it is 500 m², with a living space, a computer room and an escape hatch accessed by a staircase.
A building underground
Sixty meters underground, a development with properties for the “end of the world” is presented. A former US government contractor in Kansas created an innovative proposal: Larry Hall talks about high ceilings and spacious living rooms, but what really makes real estate development unique, in his opinion, is the ability to survive the apocalypse.
Hall transformed a vault that served to store nuclear missiles for the US military into a luxury condominium built 15 stories beneath the Earths crust. According to The Sun newspaper, he said that the idea for his project was born after the attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001.
The 12 apartments of the Survival Condo, the site built by Larry Hall, were sold with initial prices of US$1,300,000, which, when they began to be marketed, all had owners within a few months. For the tycoon this is not just a business. “Im saving lives,” he said in an interview.
The condominium has an area of ??more than 5,000 square meters, in addition to having enough provision capacity so that residents can live for five years or more, according to The Sun.
Survival can withstand the shock wave of a 20-kiloton atomic bomb explosion (the approximate power of the one dropped on Nagasaki at the end of World War II), exploding just under a kilometer away. This is possible because it is made with a special cement that can bend without fragmenting after receiving a shock wave.

An underground town
According to the renowned writer and professor Douglas Rushkoff in his book Survival of the Richest, in 2022 he was invited to a super-luxury private complex to give a keynote speech to what he assumed would be “a hundred investment bankers.”
There, Rushkoff said five millionaires (whom he did not name) repeatedly asked about the best ways to survive climate change or social collapse, while the executives detailed their plans to build underground shelters and avoid what they called "The Event." .
"The event. That was his euphemism for environmental collapse, social unrest, nuclear explosion, solar storm, unstoppable virus, or malicious computer attack that ends everything,” Rushkoff said in his book.
In a post for The Guardian, Rushkoff highlighted some of the survival companies that millionaires are employing to build their escape, including Vivos and Rising S Company. “They were preparing for a digital future that had nothing to do with making the world a better place,” says the writer.
In this sense, the Vivos company is dedicated to selling converted Cold War facilities and missile silos around the world. Such is the case of Europa One, one of the companys most luxurious projects. Therefore, it can be deduced that these people built shelters very similar to this luxury underground apartment complex.

Located in Germany, Europa One will function as a small underground town where people will be able to gather in common areas, as well as maintain their own private space. It will also offer individual families more than 230 m² of living space and numerous services. Residents will also have their own luxury private accommodation, as well as a bar, chapel and communal swimming pools. Designed to address the mental health of residents and attempt to simulate natural light, the site will also feature a cinema room, a garden and a wine cellar. |
