The first green hydrogen plant in Peru will be built on a 4,000-hectare plot of land in which the South African company Phelan Green Energy will invest about $2.5 billion, according to the governor of the Arequipa region, Rohel Sánchez Sánchez.
According to an official statement, the hydrogen produced at the plant “will be able to supply the Peruvian market and the Pacific coast, with quality products such as ammonia, low-density ammonium nitrate (ANFO Grade) for mining.”
For his part, presidential spokesperson Fredy Hinojosa Angulo said yesterday at a press conference in Lima: “Now we can announce to the citizens of Arequipa, in particular, the start of the construction of a green hydrogen production plant, a very important project. with an investment of more than 2.5 billion dollars.”
The only details of the project that are known were barely outlined in an interview by the general director of Phelan in Peru, Jean-Louis Gelot, who mentioned “conversations with the regional government for the use of this land. “We hope to close an agreement in the next two months.” He added that the project will be officially launched in July next year, following the preparation and evaluation of an environmental impact study, which could take up to 21 months.
Gelot told Encuentro that the three-phase project would use 1.8 GW of new solar energy to produce 80,000 tonnes of green hydrogen a year, which would then be converted into 440,000 tonnes of ammonia for export through the port of Matarani. Desalinated seawater would be used for the electrolyzers. |
