Chiles Ministry of National Assets approved a resolution that defines a plan to promote energy storage projects on public lands, which it canceled in January.
Last Saturday, the Ministry of National Assets of Chile approved Exempt Resolution 375, which defines a plan to promote energy storage projects on public lands.
The measure constitutes a resumption of a process that began in December 2023 and that began the Promotion Plan for the Development of Storage Systems , although it was canceled in January of this year until further notice. Its objective is to promote the allocation of areas for the “development, construction and operation of storage systems, of the stand alone type, on public lands, whose purpose is to connect to a substation of the national electrical system, which is located in the areas identified by the National Electricity Coordinator, as areas with storage needs starting in 2026.” The contracts will be signed by the end of 2025.
A web portal for applicants will be launched next week on the Ministry of National Assets site. The plan proposes allocating public land for energy storage projects that will come into operation in 2026. It was expected to allocate fiscal land for projects that would add a total capacity of 13 GWh, distributed mainly in the four regions from Arica and Parinacota to Atacama, in the north of the country.
This plan is correlated with the “Study of Energy Storage in the National Electrical System” presented in September by the National Electrical Coordinator , in which among the conclusions it is stated: “the optimal storage levels should be located mainly in the northern area of the SEN, with capacities between 1,000 MW and 4,000 MW and with a duration of 6 to 8 hours, in the period 2026-2030.” It also estimated an initial investment of around 3,165 million dollars by 2026, “for a capacity of 2,000 MW or 13.2 GWh.” |
