A significant step forward in the completion of the William Halton Parkway extension project in Oakville, Ont. was achieved with the successful spanning of the North Bridge’s superstructure between the segmentally built cantilevers.
At this milestone, the team of COWI in collaboration with BOT Construction Group, has reached the balanced ends of the West and East cantilevers of the North Bridge, casting a total of 50 segments, two pier tables, and an end span section at the East Abutment which an end diaphragm. To achieve the continuity in the superstructure, the closure segments for span two and span three have been cast with post-tensioning tendons stressed through the closure concrete.
As construction progresses, all form travelers, except for the one on the extended west cantilever of the West Pier, will be demobilized and relocated to the South Bridge for the start of its balanced cantilever construction. BOT will continue casting the “extended” west cantilever in the upcoming weeks, utilizing the temporary stay tower and stay cables to provide additional support during the bridge casting process.

The two new bridges over Sixteen Mile Creek, part of the William Halton Parkway extension project, are being constructed using a cast-in-place segmental construction technique, employing a movable form traveller system. Once completed, the bridges will span 280 meters and each host two lanes and pedestrian walkways, providing vital connectivity between Third Line and Neyagawa Boulevard.
COWI, responsible for construction analysis, geometry control, erection manuals, and construction support, along with the design of temporary work structures, is working closely with BOT Construction Group to ensure the successful completion of these significant infrastructure assets for the growing Halton region. |
