IN a bid to promote peace and appreciate former president Kenneth Kaunda’s ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ motto, Skeeble Clothing proprietor David Mukena has printed T-shirts bearing the first president’s face. “We need to appreciate the big man [Dr Kaunda] for uniting this country and promoting peace through the ‘One Zambia One Nation’ motto. We need to appreciate our icons like Dr Kaunda while they are still alive,” Mukena told the Weekend Mail in an interview. “When I was in Namibia, some ‘strangers’ who learnt that I was from Zambia inquisitively asked me how the big man [Dr Kaunda] was doing and told me how much they love and appreciate him. “But in Zambia, some people do not even know that April 28 is his birthday so I decided to do something in his honour.” Mukena is hopeful the Dr Kaunda branded T-shirts, which are already on sale, will be a reminder for citizens to promote the values the country’s founding father fought for. “The tribal talk and post-election violence witnessed during the August elections should have been hurting Dr Kaunda and I urge everyone to play their part to promote the good values of the old man,” he said. Mukena is urging his artistes to step up their efforts in promoting peace, love and unity in the aftermath of the August 11 general elections. He says artistes should incorporate peace and unity messages in the course of their duties. He commended musicians for being proactive in promoting message of peace and unity especially before the August 11 general elections. “Several musicians like Drimz, B’flow, Pilato and many other composed songs aimed at promoting peace and denouncing tribalism but we [artistes] need to do more,” said the young entrepreneur who is renowned for his coveted ‘Salt Muli Supu’ branded T-shirts. |
