Philippine Manufacturing Co. of Murata Inc. (PMM), a key player in the electronics industry, has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability by renewing its agreement with First Gen Corporation for the supply of renewable electricity to its production facility. The move underscores PMM’s dedication to transitioning all its factories and offices worldwide to 100% renewable energy by 2050.
During a signing ceremony to mark the renewal of their agreement, Francis Giles Puno, President and Chief Operating Officer of First Gen, emphasized the joint effort between the two companies in reducing emissions and shaping a future where environmental responsibility drives growth.
PMM, the Philippine arm of Murata, a global leader in electronic components, operates its largest manufacturing facility in Southeast Asia within the First Philippine Industrial Park (FPIP) economic zone in Batangas. Specializing in the production of multilayer ceramic capacitors for electric vehicles and 6G communications technology, PMM plays a crucial role in supplying components to some of the world’s leading tech companies.
The renewed supply agreement with First Gen ensures that PMM’s power comes from the Bacon-Manito geothermal power facility in Bicol, operated by First Gen subsidiary Energy Development Corporation. This facility, the world’s largest vertically integrated geothermal company, aligns with PMM’s commitment to sustainability and decarbonization.
Mr. Masayoshi Koda, President of the Philippine Manufacturing Co. of Murata, highlighted the significance of the renewed agreement in achieving carbon neutrality and advancing environmental goals. PMM’s Batangas facility has been operating on 100% renewable energy since 2022, with geothermal power from First Gen playing a central role in this achievement. Additionally, the facility utilizes solar panels with a capacity to generate close to 3,000 kilowatts (kW) of electricity.
In line with its sustainability efforts, PMM has implemented comprehensive environmental management programs across its operations, focusing on sustainable materials and increasing the use of recycled materials in its products.
Beyond supplying clean and renewable energy, First Gen’s affiliate Pi Energy Inc. provides solutions to mitigate the risk of power interruptions, ensuring uninterrupted operations for PMM’s sensitive equipment and production lines. This collaboration strengthens the bond between the two companies and reinforces their shared dedication to environmental stewardship.
First Gen’s commitment to combating climate change is reflected in its power plants, which primarily utilize renewable energy sources such as hydro, geothermal, solar, and wind, along with natural gas – recognized as the cleanest form of fossil fuel. With a total installed capacity of 3,666 megawatts, these power facilities contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy practices. |
