Work Detail |
The government on 13 April, 2024 has directed all gas-based power plants to operate in May and June, 2024 amidst an anticipated increase in demand during the summer months by invoking Section 11 of the Electricity Act.
Through this provision, the government in extraordinary circumstances instructs a power generation company to operate and maintain production in accordance with its directions. This is the first time that the government is using this for gas-based plants.
India’s power demand is expected to peak in the coming months with the IMD predicting above-normal maximum temperatures over most parts of the country till June. During non-solar hours, when renewable electricity generation falls, peak demand is mostly met by power plants running on coal and lignite. Hoewever, a higher portion of the gas-based power capacity is unutilised due to commercial reasons. |
