Abengoa Water, the water division of the Coxabengoa Group, has announced the successful completion of the final tests for the Taweelah desalination plant in Abu Dhabi. This plant, the largest reverse osmosis desalination facility globally, boasts a production capacity of 909,218 cubic meters per day.
Over a span of 30 days, the plant surpassed performance expectations by desalting 204 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD), exceeding planned capacity by 2%. Following the successful tests, the plant has been handed over to the project company, “Taweelah RO Desalination Company LLC,” comprising Emirati companies TAQA and Mubadala, along with ACWA Power, acting as the Promoter.
The Taweelah desalination plant, providing essential water supply to Abu Dhabi’s approximately four and a half million residents, is notable for its integration of clean energy generation. Equipped with a photovoltaic solar field with over 70 MWp capacity, the plant achieves self-sufficiency sustainably, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. This initiative aligns with the UAE government’s plan to foster private sector involvement in national infrastructure development.
Abengoa Water’s involvement in the Taweelah project encompasses design, engineering, equipment supply, assembly supervision, commissioning of reverse osmosis and post-treatment systems, as well as operational support until handover. The plant meets all drinking water parameters mandated by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, ensuring water quality standards are met.
The Coxabengoa Group’s commitment to complex, technically demanding projects is underscored by its portfolio across diverse regions, solidifying its position as a global leader in the desalination sector. Recognized as the Desalination Plant of the Year 2023 at the Global Water Awards, the Taweelah plant signifies a significant step towards decarbonizing Abu Dhabi’s desalination operations, marking a new era of sustainable water production. |
