Argentina advances in the tender to acquire 4 OPV type vessels to protect its maritime coastline
In response to the growing demands for the protection of its maritime coastline, the country has taken a significant step in a bidding process for the acquisition of four OPV type vessels (Offshore Patrol Vessel). This movement seeks to strengthen the capabilities of the Argentine Naval Prefecture in the surveillance of its territorial sea and the exclusive economic zone, in the midst of growing disputes over marine resources.
Through public tender 0038/2023, Argentina seeks the purchase of four OPV vessels for the Argentine Naval Prefecture. This process is presented as a response to the need to strengthen the protection of its maritime territory, vital for the security and control of fish resources.
Replacement and modernization
The acquisition of the new ships aims to improve the capacity of this federal force in its patrol and surveillance mission.
The Naval Prefecture has been seeking, for some time, to replace or complement its current fleet, largely composed of Mantilla-class vessels. The modernization of onboard assets is a strategic necessity to maintain effectiveness and adapt to changing challenges in the maritime environment.
Tender details
According to the information provided by the tender, it is expected to advance in the construction of the vessels with technology transfer. The intention to work on two of the vessels in national shipyards stands out. Article 13 of the tender establishes the construction of at least two of the four vessels in local national shipyards. This will be achieved through a technology transfer agreement between the successful bidder and the national shipyards. This approach seeks to strengthen the local naval industry and foster collaboration.
Among the notable details, the weapons planned for these vessels are revealed:
-Two RWS Sea-Rogue S.
-Base for 12.7 mm caliber machine gun.
-Mount for 20 mm cannon in the bow.
It is noted that this initiative not only reinforces the maritime security of Argentina, but also promotes technological development and the local naval industry, marking a strategic step in the protection and management of its marine resources.
