Work Detail A new campaign is being launched by Thames Valley Police to help protect people online.

'#ProtectYourWorld' aims to educate keys targets such as the young and old, as well as small businesses.

It hopes to raise awareness of cyber crime as well as encourage people to report it when they fall victim.
Detective Superintendent Nick John said:

“Anyone can fall victim to cyber crime, but the #ProtectYourWorld campaign will focus on three key audiences that we know are vulnerable: young people, older people and small businesses.

“The sharing of explicit images online or via text messages, also known as ‘sexting’, is a particular issue among young people. We have organised an event to get partner agencies together to explore online risks for younger people, share information and knowledge, and improve joint working to safeguard young people.

“Older people can also be victims of cyber crimes, including phishing/vishing and online scams. We will be launching a new cyber security training scheme which will see some of the Force’s cadets helping older people to secure their details online.

“Finally, we will be raising awareness about cyber crime that effects small businesses, such as ransomware, a type of malicious software designed to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid. Small businesses have been invited to a special event to help them understand the latest online threats and what they can do to stay safe online.”

Below are some of the tips provided by the police to help people stay safe online:

Use a strong password to keep your details safe. This should contain upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols.

Never give your personal details out online. Banks and companies will never ask for sensitive information via email or phone.

Make sure you are using up to date internet security, including on your mobile phone.

Ensure you have installed the latest operating system.

Edit your privacy settings on social media and make sure only your friends can see your updates and information.

If you’re using public WiFi, never use sites that are not secure or require personal information.

Reporting cyber crime is easy. To report online fraud call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or visit www.actionfraud.police.uk (opens new window) To report online bullying or harassment call police on 101.
