The Ministry of Energy seeks to install photovoltaic systems in 663 homes of families that consume up to 300 KWh of electricity in schools vulnerable to climate change and the El Niño Phenomenon.
The National Secretariat of Energy in Panama began the Solar Operation project that seeks to install photovoltaic systems in 663 homes of families that consume up to 300 KWh or less of electricity, residents in communities mainly connected to the grid, vulnerable to climate change and the El Niño Phenomenon .
In this phase, families interested in participating in the selection process must reside in the Kuna Nega communities in Panama; Veracruz in Western Panama; San Martín de Porres in Santiago de Veraguas; and Las Lomas in David-Chiriquí. In addition to the indicated electricity consumption, they must meet technical requirements such as socioeconomic conditions and level of climatic vulnerability.
Operation Solar will also bring photovoltaic solar energy to 10 schools in the Ngäbe Buglé Region. The students of the training initiative in installation and maintenance of solar panels, “Solar Champions 2024”, will be the ones who will install the solar systems in the aforementioned schools.
The selection process for families or homes involves voluntary applications through an online form, subject to evaluation, followed by a random selection event in the presence of members of the Gaming Control Board to guarantee transparency. This is a pilot program with inter-institutional support that arises from international cooperation managed between the foreign ministries of Panama and China for two years. Its implementation began on February 23 with the arrival in the country of the donation of solar panels, inverters and batteries by the Municipality of Fuzhou in China. Likewise, additional support has been obtained from national and local government entities, non-profit organizations, electricity distributors, academic institutions and private companies that provide resources, labor and financing to complete the facilities on May 31, 2024. |
