Work Detail Carried out with the support of Itaipú Binacional, the Modular Energy Security System (SSEM) is being designed to bring energy to remote areas with second-use batteries. The Itaipú Technology Park – Brazil (PTI-BR) is developing, with the support of Itaipú Binacional, a project that aims to store and supply renewable and affordable energy to isolated communities in Brazil. The Modular Energy Security System (SSEM) uses spent nickel and sodium chloride (NI/NaCI) batteries from the plants fleet of electric vehicles to promote energy security and sustainable development. The project proposes to reuse batteries to store the energy captured through a photovoltaic system, as well as reduce the disposal of materials in the environment and the consumption of natural resources. The innovative approach has allowed us to develop an efficient and personalized battery management system, which increases the efficiency and useful life of the batteries and makes them a more environmentally friendly option. The system is installed in the Technological Development Center (CDT), linked to the Parks Technology Directorate, where tests and improvements are carried out, while contributing to the storage and supply of energy for the rest of the projects carried out by the Competence Centers. The PTI-BR physical engineer, Jhoan Rodrigo Perez Vargas, highlighted the future prospects and social impact of the initiative. According to him, the project can bring energy to more than 270 isolated regions of Brazil that are not yet part of the National Interconnected System (SIN). “The SSEM can change the reality of these isolated regions. By guaranteeing safe, reliable and sustainable energy, we would not only improve the living conditions of these populations, but we would also stimulate their economic and educational growth. “This project is an important step forward in reducing inequalities in access to energy, reaffirming the commitment of PTI-BR and the team to sustainability and social inclusion,” he declared. According to the technology director of the PTI-BR, Alexandre Leite, the SSEM has already been gaining prominence throughout Brazil for its innovation, sustainability, technology and research. “The project is an example of the commitment of the PTI-BR and Itaipú Binacional to the socio-environmental development of the region and the country. In addition to promoting environmental sustainability through the use of renewable energy, the SSEM is also an innovative technological development with social impact that implements energy storage systems for universal access to energy, bringing improvements to communities in various aspects, reinforcing our mission to transform knowledge and innovation into social well-being,” he said. For the Superintendent of Renewable Energies of Itaipú, Rogério Meneghetti, the SSEM, in addition to being a project developed “in-house”, proposed by Itaipú Binacional and executed with excellence by the PTI-BR, demonstrates the capacity and experience of the park in the development of innovative solutions. “It also represents a significant step towards a fair and inclusive energy transition, in line with Itaipú Binacionals objectives of promoting the socio-environmental, economic and technological development of Brazil,” he emphasized.
