Work Detail | The number of construction projects recorded in Sabah reached 108 by mid-2016 and were worth a total of RM1.8 billion. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said out of the number, 54 percent were infrastructure projects, housing (21 percent), social amenities (three percent and non-housing projects (22 percent). He said the toll-free Pan Borneo Highway, a distance of 1,236 kilometres and costing RM12.86 billion to build, was among the high-impact projects under the 11th Malaysia Plan. “The state government much welcomes the construction of roads in Sabah as this can boost the people’s socio-economy and provide employment opportunities for the locals.” Musa was speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Sabah Akademi Binaan Malaysia (ABM) graduation ceremony and signing of the ‘I Pledge’ for the Construction Industry Transformation Programme by Sabah’s industry players, here, yesterday. Also present were Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and his deputy Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin. Musa said last year, there were 396 construction projects worth RM4.9 billion implemented in Sabah, namely infrastructure projects (40 percent), housing (31 percent), social amenities (four percent) and non-housing (25 percent). He urged all the construction industry players in the state to take the opportunity of getting involved in mega projects currently being implemented in Sabah to improve their capability and expertise in the field. In conjunction with the ABM graduation ceremony, a total of 77 construction industry players and relevant agencies in the state expressed strong support for the implementation of the Construction Industry Transformation Program (CITP), by signing an undertaking here yesterday. The state-level signing, which was the 232nd in the country, was witnessed by Musa and Works Minister Dato Sri Haji Fadillah Yusof and also involved major parties such as Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). The CITP is a comprehensive programme aimed at transforming the construction industry to make it more proactive, efficient and competitive up to the international level. The four main thrusts introduced under the programme are quality, safety and professionalism; environmental sustainability; productivity and internationalisation. In his opening address, Musa said the state government would give its full support to the newly-signed CITP undertaking, and would work closely with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) to achieve the goals of CITP. “I call upon more construction companies and agencies involved in the development of Sabah to come forward and show your support to implement the initiatives of CITP,” he said, while also urging industry players to take advantage of the large-scale projects that come with CITP. Meanwhile, Musa also presented the Best Trainer Award to 10 former ABM trainers in Sabah, before presenting a certificate of appreciation to Marinsun Lanun, gold medallist in the wall and floor tiles category at the WorldSkills Malaysia competition. Yesterday’s ceremony witnessed 147 ABM leavers successfully completing their training, with each receiving their certificate of skills in high-impact areas, namely machinery and welding operations as well as blasting and painting. Also in attendance was Deputy Works Minister Datuk Rosnah Haji Abdul Rashid Shirlin, Infrastructure Development Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitigan, CIDB chairman Tan Sri Dr Ir Ahmad Tajuddin Ali and CIDB Malaysia chief executive Dato Ir. Ahmad Asri Abdul Hamid. |
