Work Detail The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, has unveiled a progressive step towards sustainable agriculture with its latest initiative to develop Solar Cold Storage (SCS) systems. Aimed at enhancing the storage and preservation of agricultural produce, the draft design specifications for these units have been released for public and stakeholder comments. This innovative approach seeks to address the critical issue of post-harvest losses by leveraging solar power to ensure reliable and eco-friendly storage solutions. The SCS systems are designed to be entirely powered by Solar PV as a Distributed Renewable Energy Source (DRE), capable of maintaining temperatures between 4°C to 15°C, suitable for both perishable and non-perishable commodities. Key highlights include the system’s adaptability to be installed anywhere in India, a minimum operational life of 10 years, and compliance with the National Horticulture Board (NHB) standards for critical storage conditions. The initiative also aligns with the Government’s new scheme for farmers, reinforcing India’s commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and renewable energy utilization. Public and stakeholders are invited to submit their comments and views on the draft specifications, marking a collaborative effort towards refining and implementing this transformative project. The MNRE’s move represents a significant stride in India’s journey towards energy sustainability and food security, promising a brighter future for the agricultural sector.
