New York City mayor Eric Adams oversaw the groundbreaking ceremony for the $92m Mary Cali Dalton Recreation Center in Tompkinsville, Staten Island on Friday.
Named in memory of the former NYC Parks chief of recreation for Staten Island, the 45,000 sq ft waterfront facility will have courts, an indoor-outdoor running track, and fitness and cardio rooms.
It’s scheduled to complete by 2025.
Its builder, Kokolakis Contracting, was appointed via NYC Department of Design and Construction’s design-build programme.
“For too long, Staten Island has been neglected and ignored, but this administration is changing that,” said Adams.
“From opening part of Freshkills Park to expanding the Staten Island compost facility, and now, building a recreational centre here for the first time in 14 years, we’re delivering on our vision for a better Staten Island.”
The recreation center is part of Adams’ Staten Island North Shore Action Plan, which aims to unlock 20 acres of public open space and build 2,400 housing units. |
