Work Detail The Gateway Loop Improvement Project has been postponed until spring 2017. Construction on the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) initiative — which aims to redesign Gateway Loop in the Village — was meant to start this fall and wrap up by the end of the year. While the RMOW had opened up the project for tenders in July, along with a consultant team they decided to cancel it without awarding a contract because of budget constraints, according to a release from the RMOW. The invitation for tenders will be re-issued this fall, it said. “This is a significant construction project aimed to improve the experience of visitors and the usability of the Gateway Loop as a major regional multi-modal transportation hub, while supporting the ongoing success of the business community,” said Whistler Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden, in the release. “Re-issuing the invitation for tenders will help to ensure that this project is completed efficiently and on budget next year.” Rotary Club tackles forest clean up The Rotary Club of Whistler was hard at work last month cleaning up the Whistler Interpretive Forest in the Cheakamus Crossing neighbourhood. On Aug. 27 the group cleaned the signs along the Craterview Loop, a 1-km section of the forest that features several signs on the forest management work that’s been done in the area. The clean up was part of the work the club has completed in the forest after receiving a $13,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Whistler last May. The initiative is part of the Don MacLaurin Sign Project, which aims to rejuvenate the signs on the trail in the forest — a two to three hour loop in total. Meadow Park Sports Centre closes for maintenance Meadow Park Sports Centre is shutting down over the month for annual maintenance. The pool closed on Aug. 22 and will re-open on Sept. 19. Maintenance crews will replace the hot tub filter, drain and clean the hot tub, deep clean the sauna and steam room, repair tiles and drain and clean the pool basins, to name a few tasks. The Fitness Centre, meanwhile, will close on Sept. 6 while crews replace floors, paint and fix other minor issues. It will re-open on Sept. 17. Finally, the fitness studio will also be closed from Sept. 5 to Sept. 16. Other areas of the centre — including the arena — will remain open. Traffic delays for GranFondo The GranFondo is set to take place on Saturday (Sept. 10) with somewhere between 3,000 and 4,000 cyclists riding from Vancouver to Whistler. The Sea to Sky highway will remain open in both directions, but officials warn there will be significant delays from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. south of the Village. The municipality is encouraging residents to walk, bike or take transit, which will be free until 6 p.m. Village Gate Boulevard will be closed eastbound from Northlands Blvd. to Blackcomb Way from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Drivers will have to use Lorimer Road to access the Village. Blackcomb Way West will also be closed from 5 a.m. until 6 p.m.
