Solar Century Africa and SolNam have announced the receipt of their updated generation license from the Electricity Control Board (ECB) for the construction of the SolNam 60 MWp solar project in southern Namibia, near Keetmanshoop. The project, initiated through a Joint Development Agreement signed in early 2023, has obtained land near the Kokerboom sub-station and secured environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism (MEFT) in 2022. Financial closure for the project is targeted for 2024.
The collaboration between Solar Century Africa, a subsidiary of BB Energy, and SolNam aims to address the power deficit in Southern Africa by developing renewable energy assets. As a merchant plant capable of supplying power to the grid, the SolNam project is expected to enhance Namibia’s energy resilience, align with its climate change targets, and facilitate the transition away from fossil fuels, in line with commitments made under the recent COP28 framework in Dubai.
This marks Solar Century Africa’s second merchant project in Namibia, with a focus on supplying power to Namibian customers. It follows the upcoming construction of the 20 MWp Gerus solar PV plant. Solar Century Africa’s membership in the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) as a market participant, announced in November 2023, supports the strategy to expand its power trading business in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
Jason de Carteret, CEO of Solar Century Africa, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with SolNam and emphasized the significance of receiving the updated generation license as a milestone for the project and Namibia’s renewable energy commitment.
Saskia Breuer, Managing Director of SolNam UG, hailed the news as a significant step towards ushering in a new era of energy supply in the region, expressing excitement for the project’s development in collaboration with Solar Century Africa. |
