Resources Berhad, Malaysia’s foremost aluminum extruder company, has proudly announced a significant milestone with its wholly owned subsidiary, P.A. Extrusion (M) Sdn Bhd. The subsidiary has been granted an extension of a supply agreement from First Solar, Inc., along with First Solar Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. and First Solar Vietnam Manufacturing Co. Ltd, to provide essential components for the production of photovoltaic (PV) modules. The extension of this supply agreement holds a substantial value, amounting to RM1.08 billion, approximately USD 231.90 million, covering the contract period from January 2, 2024, to July 1, 2025. Sojitz Implements Solar Power Systems at Aeon Mall Sites in Indonesia Sojitz Corporation, in partnership with Aeon Mall Co., Ltd., through its equity method affiliate PT Surya Nippon Nusantara (SNN), is set to install a rooftop solar power system at Aeon Mall BSD City in Indonesia. This initiative, part of Aeon’s broader Decarbonization Vision 2050, aims to transition to CO2-free electricity at Aeon malls by 2025 and promote a local production and consumption model through power purchase agreements (PPAs). Scheduled to commence operations in January 2024, the solar power project at Aeon Mall BSD City involves the installation of solar panels covering approximately 4,244 square meters on the mall’s roof. With an expected annual output of 1,161 MWh, the system is projected to reduce the mall’s annual CO2 emissions by around 712 tons. Philippines’ Iloilo City Adopts Solar Power To Slash Electricity Costs And Boost Sustainability The municipal administration has embraced solar energy to fulfil approximately one-third of its daily energy demand, which hovers around 200 kilowatts. Mayor Jerry Treñas of Iloilo City highlighted the potential cost savings on electricity expenses through the utilization of solar power. The city plans to engage in the net metering program with the More Electric and Power Corporation (MORE Power) to manage excess energy, particularly during weekends. Over the weekend, the installation of 134 solar panels was completed, and they are expected to commence operations this week. The initiative is projected to save the city government around PHP96,000 monthly, with additional benefits from net metering. UEM Group Advances Malaysia’s 1GW Hybrid Solar Power Plant Project With HEXA Renewables And ITRAMAS UEM Group Berhad, through its green industry subsidiary UEM Lestra Berhad, has achieved significant progress in the development of a one-gigawatt (1GW) hybrid solar power plant, a key project under Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). The project, initially announced by the government in July 2023, involves collaboration with HEXA Renewables Malaysia and ITRAMAS Corporation. Following a Memorandum of Understanding signed in July, the companies have finalized agreements to develop the first 500-megawatt hybrid solar power plant in Segamat, Johor. Meralco And McDonald’s Forge Green Partnership, Transforming Philippine Restaurants In a groundbreaking collaboration, Meralco, the leading power distributor with expertise in sustainable solutions, has teamed up with McDonald’s to drive eco-friendly practices within the fast-food giant’s restaurant operations. The partnership, initiated in January 2021 between One Meralco and Golden Arches Development Corporation (GADC), the company behind McDonald’s, focuses on implementing custom solutions, including solar rooftop installations, solar lamp posts, and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Kenneth S. Yang, President & CEO of McDonald’s Philippines, stated, “Together with Meralco, we’re planting the seeds for a Greener future for the Good of the planet.” Indonesia’s Green Revolution: Inecosolar And Finusolprima Collaborate On Rooftop Solar Project For Sustainable Energy In Bekasi PT Ineco Solar Solutions (Inecosolar), a subsidiary of Yinson Renewables, has joined forces with PT Finusolprima Farma Internasional (Finusolprima), a significant entity within Indonesia’s leading pharmaceutical company, PT Kalbe Farma Tbk. The collaboration aims to implement a cutting-edge 264 kWp rooftops solar photovoltaic (PV) solution at Finusolprima’s factory in Bekasi. This strategic alliance underscores Inecosolar’s prominent role as a leading provider of Energy as a Service (EaaS) and Finusolprima’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship within the pharmaceutical industry. Upon completion, the solar PV system is poised to prevent approximately 250 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, accounting for roughly 5% of the factory’s electricity requirements. ASEAN Boosts Solar And Wind Capacity By 20% To Over 28 GW, Says Report A recent report by the Global Energy Monitor (GEM), titled “Race To The Top SE Asia 2024,” reveals that Southeast Asia is rapidly becoming a frontrunner in the global pursuit of clean energy. The region is poised to achieve its ambitious renewable energy goals, fueled by a significant surge in the deployment of solar and wind power. Dr. Simon Wong, the lead author of the report, expresses astonishment at the rapid growth of renewables in Southeast Asia, noting the region’s transformation from a follower to a leader in clean energy within a few years. Several key factors contribute to Southeast Asia’s renewable energy boom, as outlined in the report. Firstly, ASEAN countries have set ambitious renewable energy targets, with many aiming for a 50% or higher share of renewables in their energy mix by 2030. Secondly, the cost of solar and wind power has substantially decreased, enhancing their competitiveness with fossil fuels. Thirdly, there is a growing acknowledgement of the urgent need to address climate change and air pollution, significant concerns in the region. Floating Solar Emerges as Key Player in Southeast Asia’s Clean Energy Future Southeast Asia is poised to make solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity additions a central element of its energy future, with floating installations expected to play a crucial role. According to research by Rystad Energy, Southeast Asia is projected to contribute 10% of the region’s total solar capacity by 2030, encompassing ground-mounted, rooftop, and floating PV installations. Countries like the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand are well-positioned to lead this trend, utilizing floating PV to enhance clean energy generation capacity. A significant challenge for solar developers in the region is addressing land rights, given the predominant use of available land for agriculture. With a scarcity of suitable sites for solar farms, floating PV has emerged as a viable solution, making use of bodies of water near agricultural areas. This not only avoids land access conflicts but also offers a potential model for other countries facing similar issues.
