The Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) to collaborate on building a robust and highly efficient smart energy and power system. This strategic partnership aims to leverage diversified energy sources, with a focus on clean and renewable energy, aligning with Abu Dhabi’s energy sector strategy and the UAE’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Under the MoU, His Excellency Engineer Awaida Murshid Al Marar, Chairman of the Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi, and Mr. Xin Baoan, Chairman of SGCC, will undertake a feasibility study on decarbonization and upgrading the power system in Abu Dhabi and the UAE. The collaboration will also involve cost-benefit analyses, improvement studies, and efforts to enhance demand-side management and network flexibility.
The partnership seeks to upgrade the domestic power network, incorporating advancements such as underground gas-insulated cables, smart grids, Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI), automation distribution systems, and the integration of the Smart Internet of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Micro-Grid. The MoU also outlines training and capability-building initiatives for improved power grid operations, strategies to reduce energy losses, and the adoption of automation and artificial intelligence technologies.
Engineer Awaida Murshid Al Marar highlighted the importance of the MoU in enhancing collaborations and exchanging global experiences within the energy sector. He emphasized the commitment to building local capabilities, adopting AI-powered smart grids, and working towards substantial reductions in carbon emissions.
Mr. Xin Baoan acknowledged the significance of collaboration in transitioning towards clean energy and emphasized the role of digitalization in building efficient and smart energy networks. He expressed confidence that the partnership with the Department of Energy will advance global energy sector transformation.
This collaboration marks a significant step in China’s clean energy transition efforts, with SGCC contributing its expertise in renewable energy. The partnership between Abu Dhabi and China in the energy sector reflects their longstanding relations and sets the stage for a comprehensive model based on innovation, supporting the sustainable development goals of both nations. |
