Work Detail The Nigerian government has commissioned a 300KWp solar PV pilot project that includes a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Niger State as part of the countrys renewable energy plan. State media reported that the project in Kainji, north-central Nigeria, is part of President Bola Tinubus Renewed Hope Agenda. This is to provide "adequate, reliable and quality electricity to businesses and households in the country." Nigerias Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, said the project will increase power generation capacity and lower electricity costs. It would also enhance collaboration between the main concessionaire, Mainstream Energy Solution and its Chinese partner, HEDC in the renewable energy field, said Adelabu. The project comes with 675kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), "which is an integral part of the extension of 1G3 and 1G4 under the rehabilitation of the 1G9 in Kainji HPP (Hydro Power Plants) project." Mainstream Energy Solution Managing Director Lamu Audu, said the plan is at an advanced stage to build a 450MWp and 150MWp Solar PV at Kainji and Jebba Hydro Power Plants (HPPs). Solar energy to help offset infrastructure challenges In terms of infrastructure damage, Adelabu said that the destruction of power towers around the country had been reported to the National Security Adviser (NSA) in order to strengthen security around these facilities. In September last year, authorities reported a "total grid collapse" across all 36 Nigerian states. The collapse, the most serious reported for 2023, occurred after a fire incident on Kanji/Jebba 330kV line 2.
