The Nigerian government has inaugurated a 300KWp solar PV pilot initiative, including a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Niger State, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for renewable energy. The project in Kainji aims to enhance electricity accessibility, reliability, and quality for businesses and households.
Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, stated that the initiative would boost power generation capacity, reduce electricity costs, and foster collaboration between Mainstream Energy Solution and its Chinese partner, HEDC.
The project incorporates a 675kWh BESS, integral to the extension of the Kainji Hydro Power Plants. Plans for larger solar PV projects at Kainji and Jebba Hydro Power Plants are in progress. Adelabu addressed infrastructure challenges, including power tower damage, emphasizing the need for enhanced security.
The country experienced a significant grid collapse in 2023, attributed to a fire incident on the Kanji/Jebba 330kV line. At COP28, Nigeria and Germany signed an agreement to improve electricity supply through new substations and transmission lines. |
