Navigating Complications in the Azmet Reactor Project The greatest design challenge was developing construction solutions for large-scale steel reactors in the inland Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). They were constructing six huge steel reactors in South Africa and transporting them whole over 2,500kms. The reactors were moved at a mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as their final destination. Rather than build onsite with concrete, the project team created specialized steel reactors for offsite construction and delivery. Viva Engineering created a flexible steel design suitable for offsite construction and transportation. This allowed for pre-assembly and adjustments enabling customized solutions difficult to accomplish onsite. Accommodating the massive 11.6-meter height reactors’ also encouraged design boundaries. The team added merged structural support and access platforms to enable transport stability and flexible site operations. An interior rubber bladder brought further complication, demanding highly accurate fittings to prevent leakage or detachment in transit. Logistical Precision for Reactor Transportation in the Azmet Project With reactor transportation booked months in advance, design deadlines became demanding manufacturing targets. The project team again displayed innovative problem-solving; conducting various test assembly runs to improve construction procedures. Temporary spacers helped combine the rubber bladders into the detailed steel forms through bolted rather than welded connections. The southern African services employed quality guarantee systems to match onsite in the DRC. Their manufacturing capability resulted in all 3,265 reactor parts arriving pre-fitted without a single misaligned bolt. Such accurate manufacturing ensured the reactors held structural form amid vibrations across thousands of kilometers of road transport.
