In a significant development, Airtel Business, the business-to-business (B2B) division of Bharti Airtel, a prominent telecommunications service provider in India, has unveiled plans to facilitate the deployment of more than 20 million smart meters for Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL). Airtel’s extensive nationwide communication network will provide reliable and secure connectivity for AESL’s smart meter initiatives, bolstered by transformative solutions leveraging Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT), 4G, and 2G technologies.
This collaboration aims to ensure seamless, real-time connectivity and the uninterrupted transfer of critical data between smart meters and headend applications. Airtel’s IoT platform, known as the ‘Airtel IoT Hub,’ will be integrated, enabling advanced analytics, diagnostics, and real-time insights. This empowers customers with enhanced control over their energy consumption. AESL, with an order book surpassing 20 million smart meters from power utilities in Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, and Uttarakhand, stands poised to contribute significantly to India’s smart metering program.
Ganesh Lakshminarayanan, CEO of Airtel Business (India), expressed enthusiasm about the potential of Airtel’s NB-IoT technology in connecting and managing smart meters at scale, emphasizing its role as a fundamental enabler for the digitalization of the power sector. Kandarp Patel, CEO of Adani Energy Solutions Ltd., highlighted the strategic partnership’s role in supporting India’s ambitious Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, revolutionizing power delivery and fostering a smarter, more efficient grid.
