One section of the Crossroads-Kanengo Dual carriageway officially opened
One section of the newly constructed Crossroads-Kanengo Dual carriageway was officially opened for traffic by Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jacob Hara.
We will be building roads like these from now on. We want our contractors to build the kind of road that Shandong Luqiao Group in China can construct We want roads that will last up to 40 years,” replied Hara.
Furthermore, he said that Grade A Chinese Standards are being used for construction work on the road so it should be pretty smooth.
Completion date
The Minister also expressed the hope that Crossroads-Kanengo Dual carriageway will be finished by December 2024.
The visit however was sobering because the Minister also inspected works on Kenyatta Drive and Sharaar Street as well a Mzimba Road. Works are slow but contractors noted that they were slowed by devaluation of the kwacha, affecting project costs.
Hara also gave assurances to the contractors that government will look for ways not to let construction be destroyed.
Construction cost
The Republic of China is providing K22 billion funds to build a dual carriageway from Crossroads down stretching towards Kanengo while the K19 billion, 4.2 kilometer Kenyatta Drive and Sharrar street are being funded by Malawi.
He has also asked the contractors of a new road to use pavers instead of graders for laying base, which is more suitable.
Lilongwe Mayor, Richard Banda stated in his remarks that the built roads will help to raise infrastructure standards within them. |
