Work Detail The municipal corporation has decided to use sodium bicarbonate (baking powder) to dissolve Ganesh dols made of PoP on an experimental basis this year.

The solution of the chemical will be used during the immersion of household idols into artificial kunds at four Mangeshkar Nagar, Private High School, Nursery Baug and Ruikar Colony.

The Pune Municipal Corporation has already decided to use the solution made up of baking powder, which will help dissolve Plaster of Paris (PoP) and turn the residue into fertilizer.

The eco-friendly solution to dissolve the PoP and reduce water pollution has been developed by the Pune-based National Chemical Laboratory (NCL).

A senior official of the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation said, "Some corporators came up with the idea to use sodium bicarbonate during the standing
committee meeting recently. We are unaware of the actual results of its use. However, we are using it at some places where household Ganesh idols will be immersed as per the corporators' advice."

PoP does not dissolve in the water used in immersion tanks. The sludge formed is thrown in the open, which hardly gets decomposed thereby leading to soil pollution.

The KMC has stepped up efforts to encourage the citizens to donate idols or immerse it in tanks to avoid the pollution of the Panchganga river and Rankala lake. Recently, locals took the decision to prohibit mandals and citizens from immersing idols in Kalamba lake.

In the meantime, experts have claimed that once the chemical solution is mixed in immersion tanks, the PoP gets dissolved in 48 hours. The chemical process takes place and the sludge in the form of calcium carbonate as well liquid ammonium sulphate are generated. Calcium carbonate is used to prepare chalks, while ammonium sulphate is considered as fertilizer. The KMC will donate calcium carbonate to Chetana, a city-based organisation, to prepare chalks.

"We will deploy 18 teams comprising 300 personnel of the health department on the immersion day. One team will collect plastic waste, while the remaining teams will collect nirmalya, which will be given to organisations such as Avani and Ekati to prepare manure," the civic official added.
