Britain’s builders are being offered a £6,000 sweetener to lure them to sunny Western Australia.
The Australian state is experiencing a construction boom on the back of multi-million-pound government investment in projects ranging from social housing and transportation to mining and technology, and there are not enough construction workers to meet the demand.
It has introduced a £5.8m (A$11m) visa subsidy scheme to attract construction workers from Britain and Ireland as quickly as possible.
The Construction Visa Subsidy Programme will see those who decide to quit the UK and move to WA awarded up to £6,000 to help cover the costs of applying and relocating.
The following roles are most in demand:
Civil Engineer
Structural Engineer
Civil Engineering Draftsperson
Plumber (General)
Carpenter
Air conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic
Electrician
Glazier
Wall and Floor Tiler
Concreter
Floor finishers
Painting trades workers
Plasterers
Cabinetmakers
Carpenters and Joiners
Western Australia’s housing and planning minister John Carey is visiting the UK this week to woo British workers.
Among the attractions he will dangle is the fact that Perth is the sunniest Australian state capital, with 3,200 sunlight hours annually, almost double what London gets.
He’ll add that energy bills are half the UK’s, wages are higher, and houses are bigger. |
