The installation, made up of 28 photovoltaic panels, is a commitment between Minera El Abra and the Tocopilla Miners Guild Association (Agremit), for the workers of the copper mine located in the Chilean region of Antofagasta.
An agreement between Minera El Abra and the Tocopilla Miners Guild Association (Agremit) has allowed the delivery of a solar plant with 28 photovoltaic panels, installed in the Directorio 8 sector on route B-24 Calama-Tocopilla, to independent miners of the open pit copper mine located northeast of the city of Calama, in the province of El Loa, in the Antofagasta region.
The project benefits more than 100 small miners who work there, and will allow them to carry out more simplified work, or stop depending on generators powered by fossil fuels.
The vice president of Agremit, Alberto García, highlighted that the installed panels will also allow producers to save “since they will no longer use gasoline generators, something that was very expensive and polluting,” he said.
One of the beneficiary producers highlighted the tasks that can now be carried out with the plant: "With the solar panels we have more energy in our work, before for mechanical issues we did not have the energy to weld, use a grinder or repair a tool and for us Taking the implements to Tocopilla was a high financial expense.
