Swisscom Broadcast has won a tender organised by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) to measure the flow of people in Swiss railway stations by gradually replacing the current system.
CFF has been using an inflow measurement system at major railway stations in Switzerland for over ten years. So far, it records the number of people entering the station and the number leaving, and sometimes the number of people at a particular station at a particular time. Passenger flows are measured only occasionally, SBB officials explain in the release, which states that Swisscom Broadcast will do this much more often.
In this way, SBB will be able to reinforce the level of security in stations in a targeted manner, optimise cleaning plans and ensure that an offer is available in the right place.
The flow of people in Swiss stations measured by ensuring personal data protection
Swisscom Broadcast’s metering system will not collect personal data of those in railway stations, eliminating any risk of data protection breaches. The new system will be phased in from next year. The initial phase will consist of replacing systems already in use at some stations, while others will receive a new system from 2025.
To guarantee security and meet the information needs of public transport passengers, it is essential to install cameras and information screens on board trains. That is why CFF will publish a call for tenders in the near future.
The screens will have to comply in all respects with the provisions of the Disability Equality Act (Lhand) and the principle of energy efficiency. As for the cameras, they will have to comply with the requirements of the Ordinance on Video Surveillance in Public Transport (OVid-TP). They will henceforth ensure the protection of passengers and operating staff for a period of 20 years. |
