Work Detail US clean energy consulting firm Mercom Capital Group forecasts approximately 4.8 GW of solar facilities to be installed in India in 2016. As of August 2016, cumulative solar installations are 8.1 GW with year-to-date installations of 2.8 GW and solar project pipeline in India is now approximately 21 GW, according to Mercoms’s »India Project Tracker«. Currently there are 14 GW of projects under development and 7 GW are scheduled to be auctioned by SECI.

Furthermore, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) launched a program for the development of 100 MW of grid-connected solar PV power projects on canal banks and canal tops. The government recently announced plans to develop 10 solar zones by 2021 on 10,000 hectares (24,710 acres) of government-owned or privately-owned uncultivable wasteland to encourage project development and investment.

»Rapidly falling Chinese PV module prices have given a lifeline to Indian developers«, says Mercom in its quarterly market report. Chinese modules are currently available in the country for about $0.39 per W »and could drop further due to the massive oversupply situation in China.«
In its previous outlook in March, Mercom had predicted 4 GW of new PV power for 2016
