In a significant move, the state cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, granted approval on Tuesday for the construction of Phase I of the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project (BMRC). The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to undertake the Rs. 5,929.38 crore project as a turn-key consultant, with a fee of Rs. 326.56 crore.
The initial phase of the Bhubaneswar Metro will span 26 kilometers, featuring 20 stations, including key locations such as Capital Hospital, Rajmahal Square, Vani Vihar Square, Jaydev Vihar, and Patia, among others. The detailed project report prepared by DMRC received approval from the chief minister on October 7.
The government stated, "In order to facilitate comfortable, safer, and convenient transportation for the public in Bhubaneswar, Khurda, Cuttack, and Puri region, there is a need for the metro rail system."
Elevated viaducts will house the metro rail tracks and stations, with the Bhubaneswar Metro boasting ultra-modern coaches, an advanced ticketing system, and a cutting-edge signaling system.
Officials disclosed plans to develop the Cuttack-Puri-Bhubaneswar triangle as a Greater Capital Region metropolitan city, catering to a population of approximately 50 lakh people. Future phases of the project will extend to other areas of Bhubaneswar, Khurda, Cuttack, and Puri. The metro project was previously sanctioned under the governments 5T initiative.
The government aims to complete the first phase within four years, with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expected to lay the foundation stone on January 1. According to government sources, minimal additional land acquisition is anticipated for the tracks, which will either run above the median or on the side of existing roads. The Trisulia location is earmarked for the metro train depot. |
