Procurement News Notice

PNN 5250
Work Detail Officials overseeing the purchase of new Joplin property for Braum's plan to close on the the tract at the northwest corner of 26th and Main streets on Oct. 1. But don't expect to see an immediate start to construction.

Gordon Pulis, who handles real estate for Braum's, said, no date has been set to start building at the new location.

"We still have to get our permits. I doubt we will start this year," he said.

Braum's has filed plans with the city to construct its "XL'' model at the site. The brick building will have double drive-through windows and a dining room that can seat about 75 to 80 people who want to fill up on burgers, ice cream treats and other offerings from the Oklahoma-based restaurant chain. An outdoor dining area will be on the south side of the building. The new store also will have a large Fresh Market area with more than 100 fresh meats, fruits, vegetables and dairy products.

I was hoping that Braum's would put this project on a fast track. On second thought, maybe this is the fast track for Braum's, and I just need to be more patient.

New location

All American Rental has relocated from East 32nd Street to a storefront in Chase Colton Plaza at Hogdon Road and North Range Line Road.

The move took place on Aug. 15. The business specializes in rent-to-own home furnishings, appliances and electronics.

Hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Business opportunity

The green cane that obscured the front of the former Mohaska Farmhouse has been removed so that would-be buyers can get a better look at the building that housed the former restaurant.

The property is listed for $99,00 by the Flanagan Group with Keller Williams.

Mohaska Farmhouse was a successful wood-fired pizza restaurant. Before that, it was home to Green-Yates Appliance, which relocated to 808 E. 15th St.

Closing up

Overstock Furniture and Mattress, which opened in April in the former Office Max storefront at 440 S. Range Line Road, is closing up shop.

This store in the North Point Shopping Center features mattresses and furniture, including dining room tables, sectionals, leather and fabric sofas, beds, and accent pieces. It appears prices have been cut to coincide with the closing, so if you are looking for home furnishings this might be a good time to shop.

Whether the stores operated by Macy's at Northpark Mall are among the 100 stores the company plans to close won't be known until early next year.

Elina Kazan, national spokeswoman for Macy's, said last week that the majority of the targeted stores to be shut down will be announced by the end of January 2017. The remaining locations will be identified sometime later in the year.

Analysts are suggesting that Macy's may have overbuilt in the Midwest, where the stores serve as anchors in major malls. Analysts expected that it would be a month or so after Christmas before the locations would be identified, allowing Macy's to benefit from holiday traffic and hold clearance sales to shed merchandise.

While total company sales fell 3.6 percent last year, online Macy’s sales saw a 15 percent spike. The company is targeting that segment of its business for growth.

Macy's plans to pay its employees severance in connection with the closings and relocate them if possible. That's all well and good, but I'm not sure how thrilled I would be if I were a Macy's employee and lived under the possibility that my job might end in five months. Let's hope the stores operated by Macy's here perform really well this fall.
