Work Detail |
For the last two months, construction has taken over Central Avenue in McKinleyville. It’s for a safety project that Humboldt County Public Works is doing. According to staff with the Humboldt County Department of Public Works the project is working to make the road safer for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers. There are multiple parts to the project. One part is emergency traffic lights; these work by turning the light green for emergency vehicles in order to improve response times. The second part is installing median islands in the center lane along Central Avenue. Third, crosswalks are being revamped, as well as adding pedestrian refuge areas. Fourth, bike lanes will be painting green, to make them more visible, said staff at Public Works. People in Humboldt County said that the construction is causing them delays. It''s extremely inconvenientwhen you''re used to being able to get to work in two minutes and then it''s taking an extra 10 minutes, Sarah Benavides, who lives in McKinleyville, said. In order to get to her destination Benavides is taking the back roads. Other locals in McKinleyville said that they are finding creative ways to get around the construction. I take the back roads, maybe inexperienced travelers might not know what they are, but where I go I try to go the back way,” Lia Fontillas, who lives in McKinleyville, said. Staff at public works said that the project is getting close to completion. We have probably about 70% of the project complete today,” said Tony Seghetti, with the Humboldt County Department of Public Works, said. He said that the project should be done in one month. People who live in McKinleyville said that they are thrilled for the project, since it will make their community safer. It''s worth it, it''s worth every moment of any inconvenience, Fontillas said. |
