Ksh6 Billion Construction Works to be Conducted at Liwatoni Fish Processing Plant in Mombasa
Liwatoni Fish Processing Plant will foresee the building of the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) compliant ultra modern tuna fish hub is currently at fish processing plant in Mombasa. The project whose deadline is on December is overally overseen by the Kenya Fishing Industries Corporation but is run by the State Department for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and the Blue Economy. The setting up of the project is to be conducted in two phases.
The Liwatoni Fish Processing Plant facility will also be able to produce approximately 50MT of loins daily. This fish facility will be equipped with a cannery that will possess a processing capacity of 50 MT of raw material to produce an output of 25MT canned finished products.
Liwatoni Fish Processing Plant Capacity and Construction Cost
The construction of the Liwatoni Fish Processing Plant structure is valued at 6 billion Kenya shillings. The first phase is budgeted at an approximate of sh1.5 billion and will consist of a fresh and frozen processing plant that will possess a capacity of holding 100 metric tonnes (MT) of fish per day. There will be a cold storage unit of holding an approximate of 1000 MT in capacity. The setting up of the first phase is currently underway and its construction is expected to be done by 30th of December of the year 2023. The government has issued out over sh1.2B which has just already been set aside to the contractor. This is according to the KFIC Acting General, Dr. Mikah Nyaberi. The President has pledged to add an extra 700 million Kenya shillings to the already 500 million Kenya shillings paid to the contractor assigned.
The second phase of constructing the Liwatoni Fish Processing Plant is approximated to go at a cost sh4.5 billion, and is foreseen to be financed via Public Private Partnership (PPP). The project will also include the help of Built-Operate-Transfer (BOT) to turn Liwatoni Fish processing plant into a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). It will comprise a circular road, installation of a fish meal, ice making plant with a capacity of 200 MT, oil processing plant, fishing gear repair facility and solar power generation fixtures. |
