Assams Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, took significant steps towards the development of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) on Thursday. He inaugurated a newly constructed bridge and laid the foundation stone for a sports complex, among other infrastructure projects in Baksa district within the BTR. The BTR, established as an autonomous region for the Bodo tribal-dominated areas, encompasses four districts: Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar, and Udalguri.
In his address, Chief Minister Sarma reaffirmed the state governments commitment to the BTRs development, stating, "The state government has been relentlessly working for the development of the BTR, and once these development initiatives have been completed, it shall fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the people of this region."
The foundation stone for a District Sports Complex worth Rs. 43 crore was laid by Sarma in Mushalpur, Baksa district. The complex will feature synthetic athletic tracks, a multipurpose indoor stadium for sports like badminton, table tennis, volleyball, taekwondo, and an Olympic-size swimming pool. Sarma highlighted that the completion of this complex would significantly contribute to the growth, development, and peace that the BTR has experienced in recent years.
The Chief Minister also announced financial grants of Rs. 25 crore for the construction of a new Baksa District Commissioners Office and an additional Rs. 5 crore for a new Circuit House. Furthermore, he revealed that an amount of Rs. 500 crore would soon be approved to enhance the road infrastructure within the BTR.
Addressing the upcoming recruitment drive to fill 5,600 vacancies in Assam Police, Sarma encouraged the youth of the BTR to seize this employment opportunity by applying. He also urged unemployed youths in the region to explore entrepreneurship through financial assistance provided under the Mukhya Mantri Atma Nirbhar Asom scheme.
During the event, the Chief Minister dedicated a newly constructed bridge on Barama-Dhamdhama-Tamulpur Road in Tamulpur district, serving as a direct connection between Tamulpur and Baksa. This bridge, spanning the River Pagladiya, is expected to benefit at least 25,000 people who previously had no direct road connectivity between the two districts.
Sarma emphasized that the bridges inauguration would revitalize connectivity in the BTR, making transportation between Tamulpur and Baksa more convenient and reducing travel time significantly.
The BTR is governed by an elected body, the Bodoland Territorial Council, established under a peace agreement signed in February 2003, and its autonomy was further extended by an agreement signed in January 2020. |
