Work Detail |
Bangladeshs Roads and Highways Department has selected a joint venture between China State Construction (CSCEC) and Spectra Engineers to build a 1.1 km long, 320 m steel arch bridge over the Brahmaputra River at Kewatkhali in Mymensingh.
The project encompasses a 6.2 km four-lane approach road, featuring separate lanes for slow-moving vehicles, three road overpasses totaling 671 m, two rail overpasses each measuring 120 m, a toll plaza, and a rest area next to the bridge. Notably, the 320 m steel arch main bridge will be entirely pier-free, with only two piers located near the riverbanks at both ends.
The project, estimated at BDT32.63 billion (US$292.5 million), will be funded through a loan of BDT1,9.09 billion (US$171 million) from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, with the government contributing the rest from its own funds. The joint venture involving LEA Associates South Asia Pvt Ltd (India) and Yongma Engineering Co Ltd (Korea), along with subcontractors DeshUpodesh Ltd and Kranti Associates Ltd (Bangladesh), has commenced work on reviewing the design and supervising construction.
The upcoming Kewatkhali bridge aims to ease congestion, expand Mymensingh City Corporation, and enhance regional trade and connectivity. It targets the cross-river bottleneck on the Dhaka-Mymensingh-India corridor, improving connectivity for Mymensinghs land port and Chinese-style special economic zones. The project is due to be completed by June 2025. |
