The auction to modernize the facilities has been set at $100 million. An agreement between the Córdoba Provincial Energy Company (Epec) and the Argentine Ministry of Energy will allow the full recovery of the 750 MW Río Grande Hydroelectric Complex, the largest pumped-storage hydroelectric unit in the country and one of the largest of the continent. From the signing of the agreement, an investment of approximately 100 million dollars by the National State is expected, with which Epec has already called a tender for the execution of the works that seeks to modernize the facilities of the Hydroelectric Complex, which currently works at half its capacity. The forecast is that the works will extend over five years, with the aim of extending the plants useful life by at least 40 years. According to information from the Ministry of Energy, the hydroelectric complex, inaugurated in 1986, is known as “The Cathedral”, since its engine room is located in a cavern created 180 meters deep, below the level of its two reservoirs. The Río Grande plant has a pumping operation that lifts water from the lower reservoir to the upper one, a mechanism that can accumulate an energy reserve of 100 GWh with a performance greater than 70%, a backup to resort to in cases of emergency. character equivalent to base generation at full power (750 MW) for five days, it is claimed.
