US consultant Hill International has released images of progress on Marina Towers, a major tourist resort and one of the main elements of the Egyptian Housing Ministry’s New Alamein City development on the Mediterranean coast.
It is located on an 8ha seafront site, and comprises five towers with heights ranging from 150m to 170m, giving a total floor area of 575,000 sq m.
At present, construction is under way on all towers, although the project as a whole has been divided into two construction packages.
The first covers three towers with a shared podium, and the second includes the remaining two, which also share a podium. So far, work on both packages is a little over one-third complete.
The date for completion of structural work is January 2024 for package one and February for package two.
Hill International is acting as construction manager for the scheme. It was chosen to run Marina Towers by Egyptian property company City Edge Development on behalf of the New Urban Communities Authority.
Perihan Elwy, Hill’s vice president for Egyptian projects, said the contractors were “working full steam” on completing the towers by the deadline, after which mechanical, electrical and plumbing work would begin. This package has a deadline of March 2026, she said.
Elwy said one of the main challenges Hill had to face was that the project’s design was still under development when work started on site.
She said: “The solution was to coordinate with consulting engineer EHAF [acting as design consultant], City Edge and the client to secure the essential approvals on required design packages. Accordingly, our focus was to ensure work on site progressed without any impact on the project’s approved programme.”
She added that Hill acted to establish good communication channels between the contractors and a stringent reporting system to coordinate all elements. |
