JSW Group is in early phase of discussion with Chinese automaker Leapmotor to license technology for building electric vehicles (EVs) in India. JSW intends to use Leapmotors platform to manufacture EVs in India under its own brand name. It is likely to use a single platform on which it can build at least three mid-sized sport-utility vehicles (SUVs). Further, Leapmotor would also engineer the cars for the company, and also gain the opportunity to tap into the potential of the Indian market. The Group has been in talks with a few other Chinese automakers as well to steer forth the EV segment in the country. It is also in discussions to acquire Ford Motor Companys plant in southern India where it had stopped production last year after exiting the market. Meanwhile, the government is also working on a new scheme to attract EV makers by offering lower import taxes in return for investment in local manufacturing. |
