Construction of a new £52 million, 30-story apartment tower in the heart of Cardiff is set to begin next month. Spearheading this ambitious project is construction group Galliford Try. The tower will be developed as part of a build-to-rent initiative on behalf of property development firm The Marcol Estate, which is owned by the Rapport family.
The vision for this development gained the approval of Cardiff Council in November 2021. The tower is slated to be constructed on the former grounds of the Gwdihw music venue, as well as the former restaurants Madeira and Thai House. Despite objections from local residents and politicians, these existing structures were demolished in 2019.
Situated within the larger revitalization effort known as Cardiff’s ‘Canal Quarter,’ this 30-story apartment tower project aligns with the city’s forward-looking plans. Part of this initiative includes the ongoing rejuvenation of the Dock Feeder Canal, a project that began in February 2022. This redevelopment is a cornerstone of the Council’s vision to establish a vibrant public space featuring outdoor seating and an amphitheater-style performance area.

Scheduled for completion in 2026, the apartment tower will offer a total of 272 one and two-bedroom apartments. Among the tower’s amenities will be a fitness studio, games room, and resident lounge. Additionally, it will incorporate flexible workspaces and private dining areas available for booking. On the ground floor, retail spaces are planned, while a beautifully landscaped rooftop terrace is envisioned for the 27th floor.

The new apartment tower’s location is within the Churchill Way vicinity, which starts from Queen Street near the Capitol Shopping Centre. As the project takes shape, it will contribute significantly to the evolution of Cardiff’s urban landscape, promising a modern and vibrant living experience for its residents. |
